Job title: R&D leader in applied biocatalysis
Francesco Falcioni is Biocatalysis Leader in Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca. He is a scientist and scientific leader with 17 years’ experience in applied biocatalysis. His passion is to develop novel enzymatic processes in application-driven settings, to achieve innovative chemistry and make a real impact on people’s lives. Francesco acquired an all-round knowledge of industrial biocatalysis, encompassing all stages from molecular biology to bioprocess development, thanks to his academic background in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and his participation in EU funded PhD and PostDocs. Most notably, he worked on whole cell bio-oxidations within the FP7 project Oxygreen (http://www.rug.nl/research/oxygreen/), in close collaboration with Evonik Industries.
He then moved to industry and worked for both small and big enterprises in various capacities and sectors (Lanxess, Piramal, Hypha Discovery), where he progressively developed an interest in commercial and management aspects.
